This is an old Japanese proverb. “Nana korobi ya oki”. Never give up hope and an encouragement to persevere. It means that your focus isn’t on the reality in front of you. It is on a greater vision that may not be seen yet and choosing to stand up again after being knocked down. This is who my mother is. In the face of tremendous adversity, she is a Hibakusha, a survivor of Hiroshima. My new work examines my family history by creating an installation as I tell the story of my mother’s trip to Hiroshima to sell at the market on that frightening and fateful day on August 6th, 1945. I honor the 130,000 souls that perished, and the survivors. Museum visitors can participate and pay tribute to their lost loved ones at my Rice Memorial Station.
Photograph taken in 1952 in Iwakuni, Japan of my mother at the market.
